Unitarian Universalists for Justice in the Middle East (UUJME) has asked UUs to sign a petition to TIAA-CREF calling on it to divest from companies that profit from Israel’s occupations of the Gaza Strip and West Bank, including East Jerusalem. The petition to TIAA-CREF is particularly appropriate for UUs because the staffs of many UU congregations and organizations have their retirement savings with TIAA-CREF, and because TIAA-CREF prides itself on socially-conscious investing.
Current status of campaign:
We thank all of you who have already joined the UU TIAA-CREF Divestment campaign by signing the petition or by gathering signatures. We need still more help. So far we have about 800 signatures from UUs in over 300 congregations around the country. That is pretty good. But 800 is a tiny fraction of the 220,000 people who are members of UU congregations in the USA, and 300 is a small fraction of the 2000 or so UU congregations.
What we need:
We need many more signatures to have a real impact, and we need your help in getting them.
How you can help:
- Forward this email message to UU friends.
- Gather signatures on a printed version of the petition at coffee hours, at events, and at UU district meetings (see below for where to download the printed version).
- Post a copy of this message and a copy of our campaign poster on your Facebook page.
- Put an announcement in your congregation’s newsletter, Sunday bulletin and website.
